Bradley Elementary is one of three elementary schools in USD207, the Fort Leavenworth School District that provide education for students in grades kindergarten through six. The district falls within the boundaries of the 5,632.52 acres of Federal property. Students must live within these boundaries to attend schools in this district. Bradley Elementary was originally constructed in 1962. A massive renovation of the building was completed in May of 2001. As a result of this renovation, two new computer labs, an auditorium, and a 21 st Century Classroom (science lab) were added. Bradley is primarily a neighborhood school. Busing is provided for special education students only. The school provides a multi-aged classroom for students with special needs, which is part of the Leavenworth Special Education Cooperative. USD 207 is a member of the cooperative. Bradley Elementary is a fully accredited state school. We are a member of the North Central Association. Bradley was accredited by this Association in the spring of 2001. As part of both the State and NCA accreditation processes the students and staff are concentrating on developing or improving skills in the areas of math problem solving and data interpretation, math computation, reading, and the Six Traits of Writing. Bradley Elementary recognizes the importance of educating the whole child. This is reflected in our curriculum offerings. Our basic curriculum is enhanced by courses in Art, Music and Physical Education. Our 21 st Century Classroom is an extension of the grade level science programs. Each class visits the lab once a week. A media center housing over 10,000 print and AV items is located in the building. The center is automated and offers students access to information independently and through classes. Technology has received major emphasis over the last 10 years. USD207 has a Technology Director, Bryan Brown, who constantly upgrades our computer abilities. Students benefit from the use of two computer labs as well as from the availability of computers within their classrooms. For special education students, there are instructors specializing in learning disabilities as well as education for the gifted and talented on site. Students with identified special education needs which extend beyond those offered at the school are bussed to appropriate programs within the cooperative. Services from a speech therapist, a school psychologist, an instructor for the hearing impaired, an instructor for the visually impaired, and an occupational therapist are available on site. The district also provides students with the services of an English as a Second Language instructor. Remedial reading services through Title I are also available. During the 1994-95 school year, an after school program was initiated for students in grades 2-6 whom teachers considered academically at risk. The program provides tutoring in small group settings twice a week after school. In addition students in grades 5 & 6 may participate in Student Council. During the summer, students may extend their learning opportunities by participating in the district's Summer Discovery Program. It is imperative that the school maintain quality communications with the Fort Leavenworth community and the individual families. The majority of the families are new to the school each year and the staff has only limited access to the community since very few live on the Fort. Efforts to support communication include monthly newsletters as well as frequent classroom communications. The school has developed a handbook which it shares with the families during registration. Telephones are available in all the classrooms. Teachers encourage communication through phone calls and conferences. All teachers are also available through e-mail. Parents are a valuable part of the Bradley Community. Parents are encouraged to become active in the school by being a classroom volunteer, and by serving on the school's Site Council. |
